Specialist, Basin Modeling

Plan/conduct/coordinate/maintain basin modeling studies to understand the hydrocarbon distributions in Abu Dhabi fields and discoveries. Produce calibrated basin models that

can be used in predicting charge to exploration opportunities (i.e. concepts, leads and prospects) in all offshore and onshore Abu Dhabi areas. Advice/support in planning and implementing geochemical and basin modelling studies, and if these are outsourced, liaise with contractor to QC the results.  


Job Specific Accountabilities

Technical Work

  • Review and integrate the results of previous geochemistry and basin modeling studies and identifies data gaps or additional work required (e.g. geochemical analyses of fluid/rock samples to constrain or for input to petroleum systems modeling).
  • Evaluate basin modeling projects carried out by ADNOC OPCO’s, SPC companies, new Joint Venture partners, contractors and other third parties on behalf of ADNOC, for joint ADNOC-third party studies or otherwise.
  • Obtain necessary input data (e.g. depth grids, stratigraphic layers, facies etc.) from other team members (geologists, geophysicists and other specialists) and generates petroleum systems models to understand HC distributions in fields and discoveries, and predicts or assesses the charge risk on a concept, lead or a prospect).
  • Assist in regional play evaluations, prospect ranking and maturation studies, exploration and appraisal well proposals, etc., all in full cooperation with other disciplines and specifically integrating all geological & geochemical data in multi-disciplinary studies. Participates in, and contributes to the prospect volumetric, risk assessment, portfolio ranking and documentation of the results of studies/evaluations being carried out.
  • Continuously update petroleum systems models done previously. The updates will include verification of previous data, and integration of new data and running/testing alternative scenarios.
  • Contribute and participate in peer reviews, geoscience workshops to presents basin modeling projects as required and obtains assurance/endorsement of project results/recommendations.
  • Propose and justify data gathering activities such as logging and lab analysis of appraisal wells targeting minimizing the model uncertainties.
  • Liaise with suppliers of basin modeling software, staying up-to-date with the latest software developments and new technologies which are of potential value to the Unit and to attend conferences, seminars and to review technical periodicals.
  • Propose and prepare data exchanges / trade proposals with companies active in the countries and emirates surrounding Abu Dhabi, to complement ADNOC corporate database and to be used in regional studies.
  • Provide input for the preparation of regular management reports such as the weekly highlights, weekly action points, etc.
  • Contribute to the regular data clean-up exercise in order to maintain healthy exploration database and in cooperation with both IT and Technical Center.

  • Plan, supervise and coordinate all activities in the assigned area to meet functional objectives.
  • Train and develop the assigned staff on relevant skills to enable them to become proficient on the job and deliver the respective section objectives.


  • Provide input for preparation of the Unit / Department / Section budgets, assist in the implementation of the approved Budget, and work plans to deliver Section objectives.
  • Investigate and highlight any significant variances to support effective performance and cost control.

Policies, Systems, Processes & Procedures

  • Implement approved Unit/ Department/ Section policies, processes, systems, standards and procedures in order to support execution of the work programs in line with Company and International standards.

Performance Management

  • Contribute to the achievement of the approved Performance Objectives for the Unit/ Department/ Section in line with the Company Performance framework.

Innovation and Continuous Improvement

  • Design and implement new tools and techniques to improve the quality and efficiency of operational processes.
  • Identify improvements in internal processes against best practices in pursuit of greater efficiency in line with best industry standards in order to define intelligent solutions for issues confronting the function.

Health, Safety, Environment (HSE) and Sustainability

  • Comply with relevant HSE policies, procedures, controls, applicable legislation, and sustainability guidelines in line with international standards, best practices and ADNOC Code of Practices.


  • Provide inputs to prepare MIS and progress reports for Company Management.





  • Daily contacts with staff within the Unit and with other Departments regarding project execution and follow up.


  • Frequent contacts with ADNOC OPCO’s, other Upstream Units, ADNOC IT, HSE, SPC companies, International Shareholders and other third parties on joint studies or exploration projects.




Minimum Qualification

  •  Bachelor Degree in Geology/ Geochemistry or equivalent, preferably Masters degree.

Minimum Experience & Knowledge & Skills

  • 10 years of experience in all aspects of Basin Modelling and Exploration studies and projects such as exploration play evaluation, prospect ranking and maturation, exploration well proposal preparation, etc.
